Are Divorce Rates Decreasing?

As family law and divorce attorneys in Douglasville and Atlanta is always important for us to keep abreast of recent trends and statistics in our field. A recent article published byUSATODAY looked at some recent trends in the divorce rates amount millennials. Millennials account for the age group of 22 to 37 year olds. According to the study, the U.S. divorce rate dropped by 18 percent from 2008 to 2018.

One of the explanations given for the decline in divorce rates is that the married population is getting older and more educated. In fact, the study showed that newly married women are more likely to be older than 25 and in their first marriage. They are also more likely to have BA degrees or higher forms of education. The older age of this group and the increased education are all consistent with lower divorce rates. Ultimately, in today’s environment couples are waiting until they are more economically stable to marry. The explanation for the trends listed by the study are plausible considering the fact that higher income, increased job opportunity and an increased level of maturity associated with being older can all lead to less stress during the marriage and a greater ability to handle some of the issues most couples face.
