The beginning of March 2020 will be forever marked by the global spread of the COVID 19 virus and the shutdowns that followed. As drivers traveled the Atlanta highways and roads the noticeable decrease in the volume of drivers on the road was noticeable. One would think that the decrease in traffic would also correlate with a decrease in automobile accidents and fatalities. However, an article written by CNN contributor Scottie Andrew actually highlights the increase in the traffic accidents since the pandemic began. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published a report highlighting an increase in dangerous driving habits since March of 2020 such as a lack of seat belt use, driving with alcohol and drugs and driving at increased speeds. As a result of these increases in risky or dangerous activities during this period over 28,190 people died in car accidents. That is an increase of 4.6% from 2019. It goes without saying that the decrease in seatbelt usage resulted in an increase in car occupants being ejected from their vehicles. In fact, the NHTSA notes that the numbers of occupants ejected from their vehicles during 2020 more than doubled the number reported from the previous year. Similar increases were noticed with accidents involving drivers speeding and using alcohol or drugs.
As a result of the increase in automobile accidents several states along with the NHTSA have begun campaigns to encourage drivers to make safer decisions when operating their vehicles, regardless of how empty the roads appear.
