Are Older Couples’ Divorce Rates Increasing?

A recent article published by Kiplinger looked at the steady increase in the rate of divorce amongst Baby Boomers since the 1990’s. This particular group of divorce candidates have been referred to as a “grey divorce”. There are several theories noted throughout the article as possible causes for this increase in the divorce rate within this age group. Some of the reasons include:

  • Decrease in the negative views or feelings towards divorce. With general attitudes toward divorce becoming more relaxed, it is easier to walk away.
  • Longer life expectancies and the prospect of living an additional decade or more in a dysfunctional marriage can place the decision to leave at the forefront.
  • Postponed divorces to raise the children. Couples recently freed from the responsibilities of raising children have more time to access their relationship and whether they want to continue in it.
  • Repeat divorces. The divorce rate for people over 50 who have been married more than once is 2.5 times higher than those who have been with the same person throughout their life.

Other articles on the subject of “grey divorce” focus on the unique challenges facing divorcing couples over the age of 50. For instance, issues such as earning income after 50 and the reduction in retirement accounts due to equitable division in a divorce are major considerations. Every divorce, no matter the age group, presents it’s own unique set of challenges.
