Why You Should Consider a Vacation After a Divorce

Despite the fact that vacations can sometimes take several months to plan, they are fun to prepare for and give us something to look forward to while we go through the stresses of daily life. Most of the time, we take a vacation as a way to unwind from a stressful job or life situation. For the estimated 4.5 million people in the United States who have either separated or divorced from their spouse in 2021, the need to take a break and remove oneself from a stressful environment has never been more pressing.

A recent article by Frankie Wallace with DivorceMag discussed some of the benefits of taking a vacation right after concluding one of the most life changing events couples experience. Mental health experts have long compared the divorce process to a person experiencing the death of a loved one. A person going through a divorce essentially experiences the same stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Needless to say, the transition from thinking that you will spend the rest of your life with someone to the feeling of starting over is a lot to process. One of the most profound benefits of taking a vacation after a divorce is it allows you to take a break. When an individual remains at the marital residence or other familiar environment, there are constant reminders of the arguments, cheating and other obstacles that contributed to the failed marriage. Often times we don’t follow through on pursuing our own interests due to the demands of maintaining the household. The decision to take a trip allows you to:

  • Visit places on your bucket list
  • Meet new people
  • Reconnect with family and friends
  • Travel for less money with easier planning and flexibility
  • Experience and truly commit to a fresh start
  • Take a break from other obligations such as social and family constraints, and
  • Traveling allows you to clear your head and reconnect with yourself
